Is there a fee to be a member?
No. Membership at the North Shore Career Center is free!

Do I have to be unemployed to use the Career Centers?
No. The career centers are open to everyone. As a matter of fact, many of our customers are currently employed but use our services to explore their options.

Can you help me find a job?
Yes. We are here to assist you with your job search by offering workshops, materials, information, guidance, and resources. We have a Resource Library where you can use our computers to research job postings online, view our "Hot Jobs" listings, use the fax machine or copier, get access to industry and occupational information, use résumé, interviewing, and career guides. There is always a staff person available to assist you if you have any questions.

Is there a fee for using the copy machine?
No. Our fax machine, copier, and other Resource Library materials are available at no cost to support the career search activities of our members.

I need to file for unemployment benefits. Can I do it there?
Yes, as of July 1, 2013 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has launched  a new online unemployment insurance filing system. There is staff at our Lynn and Salem locations that can introduce you to the new online system (UI Online)  and provide you with basic support in learning how to use this new resource. The new system will allow you the independence to file and manage your unemployment claim from any web-accessible computer. If you are uncomfortable with the use of computers you may also file a claim over the telephone by calling 877-626-6800 if you live in the 508, 978 or 413 area codes; or at 617-626-6800 if you live in the 617 or 781 area codes.

Can you help me get my GED?
Yes. We partner with several adult education providers who can offer or refer you to GED preparation and area GED testing sites as well as Adult Basic Education or English for Speakers of Other Language services.

For more information on local providers, please go to DOE web site and then click on the ABE and ESOL Directory to sort for more providers and programs.

Am I eligible for re-training dollars?
We can help determine if you qualify for specialized funding. Training funds may be available to you if you meet eligibility criteria under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, the National Emergency Grants (NEG), the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the Education Rewards Loan Program, and the Federal/State Financial Aid (Pell Grants, Scholarships and Stafford Loans). The staff of the North Shore Career Center is available to assist you in determining if you meet the requirements associated with these programs.

Where can I access a list of State approved skills training programs?
The State approved list of skills training is posted on the www.detma.org website. Career Center staff is available to discuss any questions that you may have about programs found on this listing.

As a business owner, what services can I receive from the Career Center?
You may list your company’s job openings, get assistance with pre-screening job applicants, obtain information about the local labor market, assistance with basic worker recruitment or information related to participating in a job fair. There is no charge for these services. We also have a number of enhanced fee based services for business customers including specialized recruitment, targeted mailings and specialized advertising.
